The start to any Journey

Where do I start?

At the start of our adventure, we decided we were moving to the East Coast of Canada. This was a big move for us as all our family was in Ontario and although I had lived in New Brunswick before, the friends I have there don’t live close. We had been talking for years about this move, but I felt like that didn’t help me when the time came. I was so excited that we were finally taking the steps we had said we always wanted to, but so had this overwhelming anxiety at the same time. We were in the middle of COVID lockdowns in Ontario and I was homeschooling my son for Kindergarten. I say this to say, I had 1000 excuses come up the first few days, that caused me to be scattered and completely unmotivated. The only thing I kept thinking was where do I start?

Step # 1 – Make a Decision

I was sitting having a coffee one morning when it came to me, the biggest decision for me was not buying the land, and moving, that was the easy fun part. The anxiety for me was as I looked around our home. I new that the next step of getting organized and downsizing was going to be on me to do as my husband had to keep working. This really only left me with one question, did I want to move or not. For me this wasn’t a hard decision in the moment, but it is a decision that I had to stand firm in, and remind myself about over and over, through the months to come.

Step # 2 – Make a Plan

If you asked my husband what the plan should be, it was give away everything we have, while this had some intrigue to it, I just could not do it. We have 2 kids, we still needed things. I had to came up with our plan. The first thing I had to look at was how much room did I have? I started to research moving companies and rental trailer companies. It soon became very clear that the cost was way too much. We decided were going to buy a utility trailer for us to tow behind our SUV and we enlisted help from my in-laws to tow a small 12 foot enclosed trailer from Uhaul. This meant I had a set amount of space to start. My plan was to have black plastic totes in the utility trailer, and all the big items that can’t be exposed to weather, would go in the Uhaul.

Step # 3 – Decide Needs vs Wants

Now that I new what space I had to work with I started with the items that I new we needed. I made myself a list of the items, new which trailer they were going in. I sorted this out in a book room by room. If an item was not on the list, it went into its own pile, to decide.

“need /nēd/ – verb – require (something) because it is essential or very important.
